Design with the Inclusive Design Canvas

The Inclusive Design Canvas is a strategic design template that helps teams to ask the right questions and to embrace inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility in the design process.

With the Inclusive Design Canvas, teams can brainstorm more inclusive ideas and run co-design sessions by discovering peoples’ journeys, their capabilities, their needs and turn challenges into opportunities with bespoke design actions.

Break the blank page syndrome, download the Inclusive Design Canvas, and start brainstorming ideas and design more inclusively.

You can print the Inclusive Design Canvas and use it in the field when co-designing or running community engagement exercises.

You can also use it as a template in digital workspaces for remote collaboration (like Miro, MURAL and Klaxoon, provided you have an account). This helps to support remote collaboration and brainstorm inclusive designs with your team, anywhere in the world.

Instructions for using the Inclusive Design Canvas

  1. Start the brainstorming activity by defining the set of personas, covering the diverse range of users that are relevant to your project. If you don’t already have a set or personas, Contact us for assistance, or you could start by using this Example set of personas.
  2. Use the Canvas to describing the personas, their journeys, and their physical, sensory, and cognitive capabilities. Then use this information to describe persona’s needs and translate them in design requirements.
  3. Amalgamate the design requirements from all the different Personas. If any of the design requirements are conflicting, discuss as a team how these can be resolved.
